In today’s challenging job market, finding a job can be a daunting task. With so many job boards and Easy Apply buttons, it can be overwhelming to know where you should start with job searching and what’s going to actually get results. Not to mention, job searching feels like a full-time job in and of itself. This is where ChatGPT comes in. Here are some ideas for how to use ChatGPT in your job search.

How to Use ChatGPT in Your Job Search

ChatGPT can help job seekers streamline their job search process, answer questions, provide advice and valuable insights, and brainstorm the writing for all your job search materials.

It’s not designed to replace resume writers and career coaches as it’s not perfect nor complete. However, it is a productive tool to help give you ideas and foundations to start with from versus staring at a blank screen. Whether you ask it for help in your research, interview preparation, or to draft anything from resumes to cover letters to networking templates, it beats starting from scratch.

What is ChatGPT?

First, if you’re not familiar, ChatGPT is a Generative-Pre Trained Transformer AI based language model trained by OpenAI. This is a fancy way of saying it’s an artificial intelligence tool that understands and generates human-like conversations.

Think Siri and Alexa (both using AI technology), that can go beyond requests of just answering what’s the weather… but have whole conversations you would expect from any expert you sit across the table with. This means it can help make your job search a lot easier (but it won’t do everything for you!) 🙂

At the time of writing, ChatGPT is loaded with knowledge from internet sources and data (up to current events in 2021).

Getting the Most Out of ChatGPT for Your Job Search

The first step in using ChatGPT is to ask the right questions. As the saying goes: gold in, gold out.

This means being specific about the questions or inputs you provide, which will depend on the type of job you are looking for and the skills and qualifications you possess.

For example, you could ask ChatGPT, “What job opportunities are available in marketing for someone with a degree in communications and 2 years of experience?” By giving more detail and background information than “What career paths are viable for me?” this will help ChatGPT provide you with more helpful and relevant search results.

Keep in mind that ChatGPT is only as good as the prompts you give it, so I’ve put together a training on how to get the most out of this incredible tool.

Without further ado, here are several ways to use ChatGPT for your career or job search:

Ways to Use ChatGPT as a Job Seeker

1. Plan Your Career with ChatGPT

Not sure what you want to do with your career? You can use ChatGPT to help plan your career and even to figure out what you want to do with your life!

Job seekers can use ChatGPT to provide guidance on how to identify personal strengths and interests to match them with potential careers. If you’ve wondered what viable career options are for someone with X skills, that’s a question that ChatGPT can help with! Remember that the more detailed and specific you can get, the better your responses will be.

If you’ve ever wished that someone could tell you what to do for a career, then ChatGPT can be a great starting ground to help you brainstorm.

ChatGPT can also provide recommendations on ways to make a career transition and what your portfolio or background should include if you want to be a marketable candidate.

Sample Prompts:

“I am a teacher with five years of experience who is trying to pivot into a new industry and job. I am creative, have project management skills, and like helping people. What jobs would be a good fit for me?”

I am a {share as much details as you want about your existing background}. {insert your goals or any additional background}. I want to pivot into a new industry and job. What jobs would be a good fit for me?

“How can I make a career transition from a teacher to a corporate trainer role?”

2. Use ChatGPT to Research Companies

If you’re curious about what companies might be a good fit or even what companies exist in certain industries, ask ChatGPT. By asking ChatGPT about a specific company, you can learn about their mission, culture, and reputation in the industry. This information can help you determine if the company is a good fit for your career goals and values.

You can also ask what organizations match certain characteristics. Whether you want help compiling a list of industry specific organizations, size of organization, organizations focused on a specific mission or cause, or located in a certain area.

Sample Prompt:

Give me a list of 10 organizations that are focused on diversity and inclusion in Houston.

Give me a list of {#} organizations that are focused on {characteristics} in {location}.

3. Prepare for Interviews with ChatGPT

Preparing for an interview can be nerve-wracking, but ChatGPT can help ease your anxiety by helping give you potential interview questions for particular job titles or industries. You can even ask it for a sample response.

You can also tell it specifically what role and company you’re interviewing at to ask for general interview advice.

Sample Prompt:

“Please provide an answer for this interview question in STAR format: Tell me about your biggest weakness. My biggest weakness is procrastination.”

Please provide an answer for this interview question in STAR format: {Insert interview question}. {Give context to your situation}.

Not too shabby! A friendly reminder, please DO NOT use any information that isn’t true or accurate for you personally! You may need to change the answers if you use ChatGPT for interview prep, but it can provide a helpful jumping off point or a means to brainstorm ideas.

4. Write Your Resume with ChatGPT

Your resume can be your first impression to potential employers, so it’s important to make it communicate your experience, skills, and qualifications effectively. ChatGPT can help you with writing every part of your resume, from the professional summary that goes at the top of the page to the bullet points you include under each past work experience.

Ask ChatGPT to write a professional summary based on the background you provide or write resume bullet points based on the job description.

Within seconds, it will generate many bullets you can plug information into. You will, of course, want to cross-check with the job posting to see which skills are relevant AND adapt them to match your exact experience.

Note: I don’t think ChatGPT will ever replace a career coach or a resume writer, but if you can’t afford these services right now or don’t have the luxury of partnering with one for every job you apply to, ChatGPT is a great place to build a foundation.

Sample Prompt:

Write me a results-based bullet for my resume that highlights my ability to generate revenue through building partnerships.

Write me a results based bullet for my resume that highlights my ability to {main skill or requirement requested}.

5. Write Cover Letters with ChatGPT

Similar to assisting with resumes, ChatGPT can make writing cover letters a much faster and smoother process. If you’re like most, then writing a new cover letter for every single job is probably not your favorite job search task. However, you can prompt ChatGPT to write a cover letter for you based on the job description.

Don’t forget to edit as needed! While ChatGPT can come up with pretty decent paragraphs of writing, it’s not always accurate or personally applicable. Adding your own touch is the extra step that ensures you’re submitting something high quality (and makes it sound like you!). You never want to submit something that isn’t authentic to your actual skills and work experience.

Sample Prompt:

Write me a conversational and compelling cover letter for this job description: {copy and paste job description}.

6. Write Your LinkedIn Profile with ChatGPT

Having an updated LinkedIn profile is a must if you’re a professional in the workforce and want to be found for new opportunities.

With ChatGPT, crafting an eye-catching headline that highlights your expertise becomes a breeze. When it’s time to write your about section, ChatGPT is here to help you develop a clear and engaging story that effectively communicates your skills, professional achievements, and the value you bring to potential employers.

Let’s not forget about those all-important bullet points for your past work experiences! ChatGPT can assist you in crafting tailored, outcome-driven descriptions that emphasize your specific accomplishments and contributions.

Sample Prompt:

Write me a creative LinkedIn headline to target an Events Manager role focused on creating unforgettable experiences for hotel guests.

Sample Prompt:

Write me a {descriptor} LinkedIn headline to target a {Title} role focused on {ultimate objective}

7. Use ChatGPT to Learn More About an Industry

Having a deep understanding of industry knowledge is important for anyone who wants to advance their career, whether they’re searching for a new job or are already employed. This is paramount if you’re trying to pivot into a brand new industry that you’re less familiar with.

If you don’t know anyone to ask about working in a particular field of interest, ChatGPT can be a great place to start. Of course, ChatGPT is not a human that is able to broker a potential referral or life-changing introduction, nor does it have first-hand experience and knowledge to share so do keep having informational interviews! ;D)

Sample Prompt:

What should a new project manager in tech know?

What should a new {Title} in {industry} know?

 8. Ask ChatGPT for Networking Advice

Networking is one of the most important parts of job searching and can is a non-negotiable if you are transitioning careers. Whether you’re an introvert or at a loss for words, ChatGPT can help you with crafting outreach messages. It can also give you suggestions of best practices around how to network if it feels inauthentic to you.

Sample Prompt:

Write me a connection request for a LinkedIn message (less than 300 characters) to someone I admire because of their strong marketing portfolio and because we went to the same university.

Write me a connection request for a LinkedIn message (less than 300 characters) to someone I admire because of their {commonalities or interests}.
